THE DOME

You'll be spoilt with the resident Kingfishers flying past and the occasional Knysna Tyraco hopping around in the trees above, not to mention the sounds of the river running past while you spend the evening soaking up the stars in the KolKol wood-fired hot tub. 

SLEEPING

Bedroom: | Queen Bed en-suite with a double shower

Fresh linen and towels are provided.

LIVING

The kitchen is fully equipped with a gas hob, air fryer, microwave, toaster, fridge/freezer combo and a dishwasher. The living space is an extension of the kitchen, kitted out with a dining room table, comfy couch and an indoor fireplace.

Sleep 'under the stars' in a freestanding dome. Equipped with all the necessary comforts. The bathroom has twin shower heads and a double basin. 

The gas braai is housed under cover next to the wood fired hot tub.

THE AREA

Nightjar Dome is located on Oldwood Farm, next to Katrinasrust Country Estate, a trout farm located near Mpumalanga, a haven for people wanting to escape to the country for some peace and quiet. The estate offers accommodation in peaceful and tranquil surroundings.

Pet friendly by prior arrangement. Oldwood Dome is fenced. Dogs are welcome inside, off-lead on walks, and can swim freely in the clean dams and rivers, though guests must bring their own bedding and food bowls. Fences are primarily built to keep livestock out, so owners should supervise pets—especially escape artists, small breeds, or those inclined to chase local wildlife, farm animals, or the neighboring cats. To avoid property charges for muddy linen or furnishings, guests are encouraged to bring throws if pets are allowed on furniture. While farm animals and timid local wildlife pose no threat, the owners keep their two friendly German Shepherds contained during guest visits, and prior notice for unsocialised dogs is appreciated so everyone enjoys a relaxed stay.

Guests should bring all necessary provisions with them, there are no nearby shops or restaurants. Milly's Restaurant is 30 minutes away and has a lovely Deli. 

Firewood is provided.

Regrettably no children under the age of 16.

OUR RECOMMENDED EXPERIENCES

Hiking: Feel free to explore the farm on foot, from the river to the mountains, there's so much to see and explore.

Fishing: Fish one of the dams or head down the river for a bit more of a challenge. All fishing is reserved exclusively for guests staying on the farm. Trout fishing is included in all stays (no extra charge) and is strictly fly fishing. We encourage catch and release (especially if you catch a very large trout, it's only gentlemanly to put it back for someone else to catch too) but if you'd like to keep a fish or two and put it on the braai or have it to eat while you're here please do. Any fish caught to take home with you are charged at R130/kg ex vat. We do have fly rods to rent at R500 per rod per day.

Mountain Biking: Explore the forests and hillside on your own or with company.

Romantic experiences: From fresh flower arrangements (with or without a vase) and rose petal bedroom decor set up for arrival. Bubbly & artisanal chocolates. Personalised leather card pouches (single or double, with custom engraving) or hand-crafted wooden pens. Private Picnic Baskets - curated picnic baskets (available in standard or non-alcoholic options) packed for a day by the river or dams. A pre-arranged arrival snack platter. Hot Chocolate Basket for fireside nights, along with pantry add-ons like local Seville Orange Marmalade and fresh farm eggs for slow mornings. A Couple’s Photoshoot: A dedicated photoshoot on the farm to capture your stay. Capture the Moments: Polaroid film (available in black-and-white, or colour with black or white frames) to use with instant cameras during your trip.

Charcuterie Baskets: Order a selection of cold meats and cheeses ahead of your stay. Find a spot for a picnic on the beautiful farm grounds.

Birding: From Fish Eagles to Kingfishers and Weavers to Cuckoos, come and discover the bird life on Katrinasrust.
